Someplace Safe with Someone Good
For Christmas, my daughter gave me this Jan Karon book about Mitford’s Father Tim. Reading it was like slipping on a pair of old slippers – a comfortable, cozy time with good friends. My friends from Mitford, Father Tim, Cynthia, Dooley, and Barnabas the dog easily found their way into my heart once again. I often tell my husband Bill, that I want to move to Mitford just to be part of that community (and of course, realistic Bill has to remind me that it is a fictional place). A safe place with good people.
My son-in-law, Nic picked up my book one day and made fun of the title; he stated that this book would not appeal to him because of the title – Somewhere Safe with Somebody Good. He said that the title would appeal to a woman (like me), but definitely not a man (like him). Any book he would want to read, would need to have a stronger, more action packed title. His words were very man-like, but as I thought about his words, I mulled over the fact that all of us (men & women) are longing for somewhere safe with someone good. As a Believer in Christ, I am sure that my desire for that place will be fulfilled by my eternal home in Heaven. Yet, I often look for that place here on earth and find the empty spot in my heart yearning for for a safe, secure place here and now with those I love. God calls me to continue this earthly journey in faith in Him as I head for my ultimate home with my Heavenly Father . My Someplace Safe with Someone Good is coming and someday, I will rejoice in all the security, the love, the joy of being completely known I have ever desired. It is coming, but not yet…
This title runs through my thoughts often these days when someone shares with me a struggle, a pain or when I struggle. My hope is for heaven and to be faithful to His call while I journey on and to give that hope to others.
I can still remember my earthly Dad singing this song, and now I look forward to hearing his voice singing again when I am living in my someplace safe with someone good.
P.S. The book is a great read if you like books about Mitford, Someplace Safe with Someone Good – it is not action packed, but full of homey, relational people who are quirky and fun and who enjoy living life in their community. I highly recommend it if you have ever wished you lived in Mitford.
I am a humble receiver of the saving grace that Christ provided to me through his death and resurrection. My calling is as a wife to Bill, my husband of 34 years, a mother to 3 gifted daughters & 3 fine son-in-laws, and Grammie to my very sweet grandchildren. I love living in our community, spending time with people from all walks of life (I honestly can talk to anyone about anything) , studying and discussing God’s Word and always being with my family. Life and relationships are a gift that I treasure everyday.
