Memories of the Old Hymn Board ….

February 19, 2015 | Posted in: Family, Mary & Martha, Reminders of Faith

Growing up,  my family attended a little white county church called Monroe Chapel United Methodist Church in the middle of nowhere.  We were there every Sunday Morning and Evening, for wonderful potluck dinners, for VBS in the summer and Christmas programs in the winter.  It was here where I wore my Sunday best (complete with hat, gloves and purse which I obviously needed in this metropolis), that I played Red Rover at VBS,  and it was here that I first felt the love of the Christian Community.  Our lives evolved around this little white church with the bell in the tower that always ran before the worship service.

I have vivid memories of sitting on the hard wooden pew beside my Mom (who was sitting between my brother and I), watching my Dad sing in the choir and hoping that the preacher would not preach too long ( I tended to be fidgety). Every Sunday, I would read the Announcement Board hanging in the front of the church on the right wall.  It would tell the attendance of Sunday School (this week and last week) the offering and the missionary offering.  I often wondered why those facts were important enough to post in front of the church, but it was something to look at when the sermon lasted longer than my attention span.

When Mary & Martha introduced their Vintage Announcement Board, I was immediately taken back to that white county church and could picture my legs dangling off the pew as I  read & reread the announcement board to  trying to make time go a little faster.  The sweet thing about Mary & Martha’s Vintage Announcement Board is that it hangs in your home (not a church) and allows you to share scripture, hymns, family sayings, grace and even your own words with the chalkboard tiles with all who enter your home.

I am a humble receiver of the saving grace that Christ provided to me through his death and resurrection. My calling is as a wife to Bill, my husband of 34 years, a mother to 3 gifted daughters & 3 fine son-in-laws, and Grammie to my very sweet grandchildren. I love living in our community, spending time with people from all walks of life (I honestly can talk to anyone about anything) , studying and discussing God’s Word and always being with my family. Life and relationships are a gift that I treasure everyday.

I am interesting in buying my daughter in law a vintage church hymn board for Christmas. I would like to know how to order and prices. Do I order certain verses or songs, or do certain board have certain songs or verses.

    Thank you
