My Grandmothers’ quilts and Psalm 90

Last year, I had several quilt tops from my grandmothers quilted.  These quilts had been pieced together by my paternal and maternal grandmothers and one was most probably worked on my maternal great-grandmother.   The woman who quilted them thought that one was probably from the 1930’s (the one with a variety of patchwork material) and the other one from the 1940’s.  What a breathtaking thought, that the hands that loved and raised my parents made these quilts (most likely…

Around our table

Our first table was from my parent’s basement and around it sat 4 folding chairs.  It was just the two of us, learning this relationship called marriage and learning to eat my cooking (my first attempt at gravy turned into a ball).  In our first week of marriage, we had already been dealt a life change diagnose of type 1 diabetes (insulin, needles, meal plans and many tears).  Sitting across from each other, around that basement table a tradition began…

A short memorable year with long days

They are gone, yet the reminders that they were here for a year are all around.  Last March our daughter and 9 month old grandson moved into our home while our son-in-law deployed to Afghanistan.  Those first days were an adjustment for all of us, yet we eventually grew into a comfortable place as a family living together.  The year has flown by even though there have been many long days (there always are when there are a toddler involved)….

Ways Innmanuel, God was with me, on Christmas Day

“All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: The virgin will be child and will give birth to a son and they will call Him Immanuel – which means “God with us.” Isaiah 7:14 Matthew 1:22 & 23 God with us – God with me Since I started blogging in 2007, I have taken time to record the recognizable moments of how I experienced God with me on Christmas Day.  This is the 5th in a series titled Ways…

The Perfect Gift for the Writer of Recognize & Remember

Yesterday, I wrote about how Bill has given me a Christmas Ornament each year of our married life.  This year’s ornament was the perfect gift for me as the writer of Recognize & Remember. Hallmark’s Christmas Memory Keeper This pretty little holder comes with little cards with headings such as Blessings, Wishes, Memories or Hopes.  Each family  member filled out  cards with their Christmas thoughts. The comments included… “I am excited to make new Memories with my new husband ”…

Recognize & Record: Your Child's Christmas Tree Ornaments

Taking down a Christmas Tree is never as much fun as putting it up.  I am usually ready for our main tree (we have 3 trees) to come down around New Year’s.  Our family tree is a live tree so by New Year’s it is dropping needles and looking droopy.  Even though this year’s tree is still  looking good, it will still probably come down this weekend. I bought my 1st Christmas Tree Ornament when I was 16 and that…

A Week Of Thankfulness

In this new “season” of my life, as  Bill and I embrace (and accept) our empty-nest, I am thankful for the memories that I have treasured of  past Thanksgivings.  Memories of little girls dressed liked pilgrims heading to their 1st grade Thanksgiving feast, of a  Thanksgiving’s Eve Tradition of visiting a Christmas Tree display and picking out new ornaments, of hand printed place cards at our Thanksgiving  table, and of dear family members gathered around the table.  My friends, it has gone…

Since marriage is on my mind

As we prepare for Jason and Alycia’s wedding, here is a favorite blog post to encourage you in your marriage (or soon to be wedding).  One of the comments that was left on the original  post was from the upcoming bride, my daughter Alycia – her words are special to read now… “So-I saw commercial today with the typical beautiful couple talking about how they were SO compatible with each other. This made me think about you and your blog and…

A Family Heirloom Awaiting the Next Generation

26 years ago, a couple named Bill and Sandy (that is my husband and I) were awaiting our first-born child.  We had no idea if we were having a boy or a girl, but we were excited and scared (at least I was).  We had just moved into a new house and had a yellow gingham nursery ready.  In the garage, Bill worked on a cradle for the new baby and he did so without the many tools that he has today….
