For Moms of Graduating Seniors — hold tight and let go

Last week, I wrote an email to a cherished friend whose first born is about to graduation from high school.  I have found myself sharing these types of words often in the last couple of years (many of the MOPS Moms I mentored now have graduation seniors)…. You have no idea how many times I have thought of you over the past school year as you have posted photos of your senior.  There have been so many times that…

Continuing to learn this role called Mother

Happy Belated Mother’s Day to my many friends who are Mothers and to everyone who ever had a Mom.   I had a sweet Mother’s Day with 2 of my daughters enjoying a dinner created by my oldest daughter and enjoyed in her home.  I missed seeing my own mother and our middle daughter and grandson on Mother’s Day, but I am thankful for cards that were sent and received, voices that were heard over phones and hearts that were…

Christmas Changes

The last couple of years Christmas has been all about changes.  For years, I could tell you how Christmas would be celebrated at our home… a few days before Christmas, my parents would come, Christmas Eve morning the sisters would exchange gifts (this tradition started because they could not wait to open gifts), Christmas Eve brought church and then a house filled with family and friends for food and celebration.  Christmas day brought more good food, sweet time with our…

Every Mom has experienced this Woman in the Grocery Store

Our new MOPS (Mother of Preschoolers) Ministry year started yesterday which means I started my 10th year as a MOPS Mentor.   Yesterday, as MOPS started again, I was reminded again of wonderful experience that being a Mom is and how I have now become… That Woman in the Grocery Store   As a Mom you’ve experienced that woman in the grocery store,  You know, that one that tells you to treasure every moment of your child’s life because it goes…

A Yearly Favorite Blog Post: Verses to send with your children as they head back to school

Just a few hours ago, my youngest daughter loaded all of her stuff into a car to head back to college.  This is not the first time, I have done this but it is the last.  Next year at this time, she will be married.  Saying goodbye always looks the same – piles of stuff in our home, loading it all in the car, and then a circle of prayer and finally tearful goodbyes.  Then there is an emptiness about…

A Bittersweet Monday

This weekend found our homey home full of our daughters, my Mom and  friends for Alycia’s Bridal Shower.  What a sweet time we had enjoying each other’s company, holding baby Joey, eating good food, and just being together.   Our family and friends surrounded us in church yesterday as we worshiped our ever faithful God, Bill and I both acknowledged how blessed we are. Me, Audrianna, Alycia, Laryssa and my Mom (Nana) Yesterday and today, our good byes were mixed with tears…

A Box of Mothering Memories

Several weeks ago, Laryssa was able to spend a week with us and it was fun to have her “home.”  While she was here, we had a  baby shower for her, did some shopping (for the baby of course) and even celebrated her birthday on her actual birthday! At the shower, Alycia, Laryssa and me – missing is Audrianna who was at college. While she was here, I remembered that I had packed away for each of the girls a…

They're Engaged!!

Last Wednesday, Saint Patrick’s Day, our oldest daughter, Alycia said YES to marrying Jason.  She started her day in Florida with her Grandparents and me, arrived in Pittsburgh in time to have lunch with her Daddy and by that evening, she had a fiance and a beautiful engagement ring on her finger. Photo taken by Jason’s Mom of Jason & Alycia that evening. Once again, Bill and I are so blessed by God bringing Jason into Alycia’s life.  I told him…

A Mother's Paycheck – My Mother's Hands

This week I have missed my youngest daughter more than usual.  I think it is because there have been so many snow days (days from school because of snow).  It would be fun to spend the day with Audrianna, snowed in so we could talk, watch TV and work on dinner together.   Above my kitchen sink, I have a poem she wrote me and then framed titled My Mother’s Hands.  It was part of  a wonderful Christmas gift my daughters got me several years ago (you…

The Empty Nest at our Homey Home

This is a post that I have been writing in my head for the last 10 weeks – especially as so many people have asked how we are doing with our empty nest.  So here is my answer to how are we doing with the empty nest? Well… it is hard yet good, lonely yet freeing,  fun and yet sad, and did I mention quiet?  I have enjoyed the freedom from parenting (mostly driving back and forth to Audrianna’s school and work)  –…
