For Moms of Graduating Seniors — hold tight and let go

Last week, I wrote an email to a cherished friend whose first born is about to graduation from high school.  I have found myself sharing these types of words often in the last couple of years (many of the MOPS Moms I mentored now have graduation seniors)…. You have no idea how many times I have thought of you over the past school year as you have posted photos of your senior.  There have been so many times that…

Recognize & Record: Your Child's Christmas Tree Ornaments

Taking down a Christmas Tree is never as much fun as putting it up.  I am usually ready for our main tree (we have 3 trees) to come down around New Year’s.  Our family tree is a live tree so by New Year’s it is dropping needles and looking droopy.  Even though this year’s tree is still  looking good, it will still probably come down this weekend. I bought my 1st Christmas Tree Ornament when I was 16 and that…

A Box of Mothering Memories

Several weeks ago, Laryssa was able to spend a week with us and it was fun to have her “home.”  While she was here, we had a  baby shower for her, did some shopping (for the baby of course) and even celebrated her birthday on her actual birthday! At the shower, Alycia, Laryssa and me – missing is Audrianna who was at college. While she was here, I remembered that I had packed away for each of the girls a…

A Mother's Pay Check – A Story from Me

Even though our home may be empty, there are always special items in our home to remind me of my Mother’s Paychecks – how I was paid as a Mom.  This story is one that has come to my mind this week as I await the arrival of our daughters coming home for Thanksgiving. When Laryssa was about 10 or 11, I caught her with a flashlight under her covers one night after she was suppose to be asleep.  Of course, that was…

She reached for my hand

Several weeks ago in church, my middle daughter (the one who just graduated from college and will be married in September) reached over and held my hand.  It was a very pleasant surprise.  At first, I thought she was wanting me to get her something (like a pen or a mint from my purse) – but no, she just wanted to sit in church and hold hands with her Mom. I remember when she was about 5 years old and I…

Twenty Five Years Ago

Several days ago my oldest daughter celebrated her birthday.  Twenty-five years ago I became the mother of a wonderful, beautiful daughter whom we named Alycia.  She has been a total joy all 25 years – easy to raise, delightful to be around, fun and overall she just made the mothering journey smooth.  She is a wonderful first-born, the perfect older sister and I am totally in love with this young woman.  When my book, Scrapbooking Your Spiritual Journey, was published I wrote this…

Secure Memories from old Post-it notes

Years ago, when our family was living in a double-wide trailer (a very nice one, I might add) – our oldest daughter, Alycia stuck Post-it® Notes  on the back of Bill and I.  Believe it or not, I still have those Post-it® notes today (okay, I know that it is easy to believe – just look at the name of this blog).  These Post-it® notes read (written in ink and pencil in the handwriting of a 9-10 year old): “This is…

The blessing of driving to Midland

In 8th grade, my youngest daughter asked to changed to a different school.  Our oldest daughter started Kindergarden in 1989 at a private Christian K-12 school and we had been very happy at this school (both academically and spiritually).  Our oldest and middle daughters spent their entire education there, so when Audrianna came and asked to change schools, it was not in my plans.  I remember thinking that “We are a Christian School Family and this is what we are committed to”,  also…

My Daughter's Tree

As I mentioned in a post last week – my oldest daughter took her Christmas ornaments to decorated her own tree this year.  Yesterday, Bill and I went to see her tree (and take her out to eat).  Her tree is beautiful and full of wonderful reminders of her childhood days (since her ornaments are the only ones on the tree – her roommate does not have any ornaments).  I sat on her comfy love seat and enjoyed remembering each ornament…

Reflections from a quiet home ….

The house is quiet now – one daughter drove back to her city apartment, one daughter was dropped off at college and the youngest is with her youth group friends.  Bill and I just arrived home after a rainy 2 hour drive to the picturesque college our middle daughter attends; finally alone in the car after days of conversations and activities with our daughters, our friends and theirs.  It has been a good Thanksgiving week ~ we are very blessed. The…
